Ka`iana, high chief of Kaua`i, visits China with Lieutenant Mears in the Nootka, returning from there the following year with Captain Douglas in the Iphigenia via Oregon.


John Mackay, the first white resident, arrives on the Imperial Eagle; the ship also carries the first European women to visit Hawai`i. The ship leaves with the first Hawaiian known to sail for foreign lands, a woman hired to be Frances Barkley's maid called "Wynee," probably an attempt to spell wahine.


Alexander Shaw publishes A Catalogue of the Different Specimens of Cloth Collected in the Three Voyages of Captain Cook to the Southern Hemisphere containing actual samples of Hawaiian and other Pacific kapa and notes on its manufacture; no two catalogue books are exactly alike.

John Mackay is the first white resident of Hawai`i.


U.S. Constitution signed.

Mozart's Don Giovanni premieres in Prague.
