Sir Peter Buck dies

Sir Peter Buck (Te Rangi Hiroa) died while serving as Director of the Bishop Museum. Buck was born in New Zealand to an Irish father and Maori mother. Trained as a medical doctor, he served during World War I with the Medical Corps treating Maori troops. In his medical work, he found cultural knowledge essential to his success and his later research was culturally-oriented. In 1936, Buck was appointed as ethnologist and director of Bishop Museum in Honolulu. While there, he published numerous scientific papers as well as popular works.
