Jack London sails to Hawai`i

Author Jack London and his wife Charmian sailed their ketch the Snark from San Francisco to Honolulu. The Londons spent five months touring the Islands before they headed off on a two-year cruise of the South Seas. While in Hawai'i, they surfed at Waikiki, visited with Prince Jonah Kalaniana'ole and Lili'uokalani, explored Haleakala, Parker Ranch, Kilauea volcano and Kalaupapa. Jack London's Hawai'i stories and descriptions appeared in The Cruise of the Snark and The House of Pride. The Londons returned to Hawai'i in 1915 and 1916, the year Jack died of kidney disease at age 40.
