Mauna Loa eruption threatens Hilo
A new lava flow broke out on the northeast rift zone of Mauna Loa, heading toward the town of Hilo. Thomas Jaggar decided to try out an idea proposed earlier by Lorrin Thurston: that the lava be stopped or diverted by placing explosives in lava channels. The flow was then bombed using planes. Whether that was the deciding factor or not, the flow did stop soon afterward, averting any damage to the town.
