Return to the year 1862

Prince Albert dies

The son of Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, Prince Albert Edward Kauikeaouli Leiopapaakamehameha, was given his English names in honor of the husband of his godmother, Queen Victoria. Doted on by his parents, the young prince's governess was Kapi'olani (later David Kalakaua's wife and consort) and he had a childhood filled with princely favors, such as being made an honorary member of the Honolulu Volunteer Fire Department for his fourth birthday. Not long afterward, Albert became seriously ill, perhaps with spinal meningitis, and he died August 23, 1862.
