Liholiho and Kamamalu die in London
To gain knowledge of the world as well as political advice and to establish a treaty of friendship with the British crown, Liholiho traveled to England by ship, taking with him his favorite wife Kamamalu and several chiefs and advisors. Entertained by the English Foreign Office, they attended receptions, theater performances, and other events. In June, Manuia, a steward to the party, caught measles and it spread to all in the entourage. They had no resistance to the disease, and when Kamamalu also caught pneumonia, she died July 8th and a grieving Liholiho followed her, dying July 14th. Everyone else in the group recovered. Boki, the ranking chief among the survivors, met with King George IV at Windsor before returning to the Islands with the royal bodies entombed in gilded caskets.
